DEPRESSION

 

Depression is a disorder that causes one to feel prolonged sadness, fatigue and lack of energy, irritability and loss of interest in daily activities. It lasts for at least 2 weeks. The disease can be contracted by anyone regardless of age, gender or race. Depression can last for months or years.

Who is at risk for depression. Among the individuals at risk are those who have had depression in the past, have family members who suffer from depression, chronic chronic illness, sudden loss of limbs, sudden death of loved ones, divorce and marital problems, drugs and alcohol, taking certain and illicit drugs, victims of abuse, stress at work, having been abused as a child, easily worried or anxious as well as economic crisis

There are many signs and symptoms of depression which include, prolonged sadness, loss of interest in hobbies and activities performed, quickly feeling tired and powerless, easily discouraged, guilt, feeling worthless, sleep disorders , waking up too early or excessive sleep loss of appetite and drastic weight loss, prone to suicide attempts, restlessness and irritability, concentration and memory, decision making. For physical symptoms, patients often experience headaches, body aches and digestive disorders, lack of sexual desire, limited movement or stiffness or restlessness and anxiety or phobia.

Among the causes and causes of depression are due to chemical changes in the brain, hereditary diseases, living environment and lack of family support, certain medications that can trigger depression, other diseases such as thyroid dysfunction hypothyroidism can also cause depression. The way of thinking can also trigger depression. This includes how we perceive ourselves, life and the world as a whole. Stress can also lead to depression if left unchecked. Other causes include drug abuse, alcohol addiction, loss of loved ones, and newborns.


If a person suffers from depression, then the patient is required to see a doctor immediately at any of the nearest health centers or the patient can see a counselor. Patients are also advised to do something that can make you laugh. Stop or take a break from routine things and avoid making big and risky decisions. Patients can also try to break large tasks into smaller ones and give priority to which ones are more necessary and most importantly, get closer to Allah.
